What is Soccer?
At its simplest, soccer is a game of two teams playing against each other, with each team attempting to score a goal. The team with the majority of goals at the end of the game is seen as the victor. The game typically occurs on a large, rectangular grass field, commonly known as a pitch, with each team trying to move the ball towards the game’s objective - to score a goal.

At the beginning of a game, each team is assigned a designated area of the pitch, either the left or right side. During a typical game, the two teams generally move the ball from side to side until one team is able to progress the ball past their opponents goal line and score a goal. Since it is illegal for any player other than a designated goalkeeper to touch the ball during the instance of scoring, defences are forced to work together, attempting to limit the opposition’s ability to score.

The game is played between two teams, each of which is normally composed of 11 players, one of whom is considered by the team as the goalkeeper. Most of the players are usually adults, few are gifted children too. The rules of the game define the equipment and facilities necessary to play a match, while other specific rules exist to protect participants from injury.

Players compete against each other to gain control of the ball and advance it past their opponents in an effort to score a goal. The team currently in possession of the ball is referred to as the offense, and must try to move the ball towards the other team’s goal line. The players not in possession of the ball are capable of trying to win it back by tackling or out-maneuvering their opponents.

Soccer is a fast-paced and exciting game that can bring families and friends together in celebration. It is a game that enthralls its participants, encourages passion and intensity and above all, an appreciation for a game that most countries treat like a religion. It is an important part of the world’s culture despite its apparent differences from the traditional sports. It not only provides a means of entertainment and physical exercise, but continues to be a uniting force that contributes to great life experiences.
