Venice, The Floating City
The enchanting landscape of Venice was formed in the 5th century when inhabitants fled from the mainlands to escape the raging war and marauding Barbarians. The city was then built upon an illustrious tradition of trade and the numerous small islands provided a safe harbor for the people of Venice. As the centuries passed, the city grew larger, more sustainable and its merchants roamed the Mediterranean. Venice was a major port city and a major player in many trading networks. The most famous maritime expedition Venice set out on was Marco Polo’s journey to Cathay.

The city is unique in the sense that its iconic look is maintained by its ancient canals which are its foundation. To this day,Venice features the same dogmatic structure it had during the Middle Ages. As visitors stroll down the narrow pathways and laneways of Venice, they are met with a vibrant and colourful environment that oozes charm and history. The network of canals are lined with intricately designed architecture and many iconic landmarks line the waters, such as the Rialto Bridge, St Mark’s Campanile and the Doge’s Palace. Visitors are sure to be in awe of the towering domes and elegant arches that are embedded in the city’s medieval skyline.

The sheer beauty of Venice is enough to captivate any visitor who passes through its glamorous streets. With its cobblestone pathways, vibrant markets and exquisite canals, Venice is still a vibrant trading hub and its unique culture is still embraced in its markets, restaurants and famous Carnival.

From its humble beginnings, Venice is still a proverbial city that struggles to keep its identity in the 21st century. As a legendary and popular tourist destination, Venice is still cherished and respected throughout the globe. The ancient beauty of Venice continues to enthral us and its medieval history, culture and beautiful landscape make it the epitome of a modern day “Floating City”.
