Kanchipuram, The Land of Silks
Kanchipuram, India, is often referred to as the "Land of Silks". This nickname originates from the city's centuries-old reputation as a hub of silk weaving, a craft which has been practiced here since ancient times. Located in the central part of Tamil Nadu, Kanchipuram is known for its religious significance as the spiritual capital of the state and its magnificent Sari-weaving industry.
The city's silk industry is believed to have been established in the early 6th century when King Simhavishnu of the Tondai Mandala dynasty relocated his capital from Uraiyur to Kanchipuram. Although other parts of India have since developed their own silk-weaving industries, Kanchipuram remains particularly renowned for its unique, brightly coloured saris, which are composed of two layers of contrasting fabrics and are decorated with beautiful patterns. Known as Kanchipuram Pattu Saris, these exquisite creations are a reflection of the city's long-standing tradition of skillful weaving, and have made the city famous worldwide.
In order to create a Kanchipuram Pattu Sari, artisans first dye the silk thread and then use a special hand-tied technique called ‘temple knot’ to create intricate and detailed designs. This process is labour-intensive and requires a great deal of skill, which is the reason why these saris are so expensive. Once the sari is woven, it is decorated with zari, an art form in which gold or silver thread is intricately woven into the fabric.
Kanchipuram's culture and artistry are also reflected in its landscaping. For example, most of its temple walls are decorated with intricate stone-carvings and sculptures, and the city’s streets are lined with silk merchants and their shops, where one can find all kinds of beautiful bespoke items.
