THE FESTIVAL OF COLORS

Holi, the festival of colors is celebrated every year on the day after the full moon according to the Hindu month of Phalguna which is early March. People will march the streets and spray colored water and powder while dancing and singing. This festival has been celebrated all over India since the ancient times. Initially, it was an agricultural festival which celebrated the arrival of spring.

The festival Holi, is based on a Hindu legend Holika. She was a female demon and the sister of the demon Hiranyakashayap. He was the ruler of the universe and superior to all Gods. However, Hiryanakashayap's son Prahlad followed Lord Vishnu by going against his mother. Prahlad's action made his father to collaborate with Holika to kill him. Prahlad escaped with the saving hands of Lord Vishnu and Holika died in flames. The moral behind this story is that " The good always wins over the evil".

Holi has a huge significance in the Hindu culture. It is a day where people forget and forgive. In most cases people pay their debts and forgive debts embracing new deals in their lives. Holi is celebrated by gathering wood to light a bonfire.

The fire symbolizes the Holikan Dahan. People gather around the bonefire on Holi eve singing and dancing. Usually, natural colors are used including dhak, kumkum, turmeric and neem.

Holi is a festival that makes every moment of the event memorable with fire, color and love.
